Do we see the content of your files?

The proof itself relies only on your file's fingerprint: 32 bytes that cannot be used to rebuild its content. The file itself is kept only so that you can retrieve it.

What is sent, and when

The SHA-256 fingerprint is computed at the time of the deposit, before anything is sent. It is the fingerprint that is timestamped and recorded in the registry.

For the free deposit, the file is then transferred automatically, encrypted, to our storage, so that you can retrieve it if you open an account with the same email address. For subscribers, this transfer happens on request, so they can better organize their deposits.

Where the file goes

The transfer goes directly from your browser to our encrypted storage provider, Storj, which splits each file into encrypted fragments across its decentralized storage network. The content can be viewed from your space. Ipocamp holds the access needed to return it to you, but our team does not open it, except at your written request or when the law requires it.

Why the fingerprint is enough for the proof

This is the founding principle of timestamping: you date a fingerprint, not a file. On the day you need to rely on the proof, you produce the original file. Its fingerprint is recomputed and compared with the one on the certificate. Encrypted storage is an additional service, separate from timestamping.

For a trade secret or an invention

For sensitive information, a subscription lets you transfer the file only on request. In every case, keep the original yourself, without modifying it. See also Trade secrets: documenting your protection.
